how can coral reefs overcome darwins paradox? and how can golf courses be a threat to coral reefs?

Coral reefs overcome Darwin’s paradox because the inhabiting organisms at the bottom of the food chain (mainly phytoplankton & algae) produce are photosynthetic (i.e., they produce their own nutrients from the sun, so they don’t need the ocean water to provide nutrients). Small fish rely on these phytoplankton & algae as a food source, and then larger fish eat these smaller fish. So there can be a large, diverse ecosystem in relatively nutrient-deficient water because the sun is the original source of nutrients, not the water.

Oceanfront golf courses can pose a threat to coral reefs since the water used to maintain the grass on the courses eventually drains into the nearby ocean. This water is most often fresh water (not salt water) and can contain pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals. Seepage of this water into the nearby ocean can change the chemical makeup of the water surrounding the coral reefs, possibly altering, damaging, or killing the coral and its inhabitants. An recent example of this effect occurred in Costa Rica, where the fertilizer from a nearby golf course caused overgrowth of algae in the ocean, which blocked the sunlight from the coral reef, ultimately killing it.
