Alcoy: a Lush Costa Blanca Valley Surrounded by Mountains

In search of a place far away from the madding crowds to book your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS? Explore the area around Alcoy. The mountainous area north of Alicante known as the “Comtat” due to the mountain ranges with vertical drops and interlocking valleys is home to Alcoy. This little village is snuggled up in a fertile valley in this area. The lushness of this valley is in direct contrast to the other drier areas in the province. The mountain ranges that surround Alcoy are the Mariola, Biscoi, Marrascal, els Plans, la Serreta and la Font Roja. These mountains offer a short respite to people seeking to escape the hot and crowded beaches for a weekend picnic or barbecue.

The industrial revolution was the direct cause of the town’s growth, as otherwise it would have continued to be a small agricultural mountain village. The biggest area of growth during this period was in the textile industry which elevated Alcoy to a level of importance higher than any other village in the area. This industry is still important today along with paper, furniture, ceramics and shoes. Even with the lush valley surrounding the village, the agricultural economy is still an important factor.

The tourist trade in this area is due to the surrounding picturesque mountains which attracts hikers and horse riders. When venturing up these mountainous trails you will be exposed to some of the most beautiful countryside around. Besides hikers and horse riders, this area attracts a host of cycling and mountain biking enthusiasts. Included in all this are some excellent golf courses such as Oliva Nova Golf and Ifach Golf Club.

If you really feel it necessary to play on a beach then an hour’s ride away is the coastal towns of Benidorm, San Juan and Alicante. You will find an array of water sports at anyone of these seaside resorts. Besides the beach and its water sports these resorts offer a lot to see and do for the family no matter what age they are.

With Alcoy being an agricultural centre, you wouldn’t expect anything less than a top class restaurant. There are a few located in Alcoy that offer traditional Spanish meals made with the freshest produce served with excellent local wines. There are shops in Alcoy that sell the local wine so why not grab a few bottles and take them home with you. If you need a present for those you left behind there are some shops selling arts, crafts, souvenirs and locally made confectionery.

When on your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS in Alcoy take some time and visit a few of the historical sites on offer. To start with there are the 12th century Castillo de Barchell and the 13th century Torre de Na Valora. There are also a number of religious buildings to explore so all you have to do is take a walk through town and see what’s on offer.

Which is better? A ’91 Mercedes 300E (from college days) & ’08 Porsche 911 combo or just 1 car like BMW 750?

My older car from 91 Mercedes 300E is not as reliable as the newer cars. I started thinking because I started golf recently after I got a ’08 Porsche 911. Golf bags don’t fit into a Porsche with a passenger. So I started thinking if I should continue to drive to golf courses my old & not so reliable Mercedes or to just get rid of the 91 Mercedes 300E and 08 Porsche 911 for just one car like the Mercedes S-class or a BMW 750. I’m still in my 30′s, and I don’t want to look like I took out my father’s S-class or 750 if I choose to get rid of my college-day Mercedes 300E and the 08 Porsche 911. What would you do? Keep two cars or just get one comfortable sports sedan? Oh, one reason I got a sports car (had a Corvette and 01 Porsche 911) was because I got bored with the overly luxurious ride in my 91 Mercedes for about a decade. Thanks.
Keep 2 cars (race car & sedan) or just get one multi-tasker 4 door like BMW 750, 650, M6 or Mercedes S550?
