If you find your ball after you’ve hit another do you have to play it?

I hit my tee shot into the woods witch was clearly marked as a lateral hazard (there is a little creek in there). I looked for couple minutes, didn’t find it, dropped another and blasted it up the fairway. Then I went back into the woods and found the ball where I probably could have hit it, and would have tried had I found it before I dropped another. So my question is under the rules of golf should I have played the first ball? I looked at it and figured I was going to be lying three in about the same place so I just put it in my pocket.
A lot if interesting takes on this one. Why would you hit a provisional if where the ball went was clearly marked with red stakes? Someone said it doesn’t matter if the area is marked as a hazard. Seems to me that has a lot to do with this.
