When buying a set of golf clubs do you need hybrids and fairways or just irons?
To play golf well you need a variety of clubs. Your irons are your scoring clubs – especially the short and mid irons that are your most accurate clubs and you can stick it close to the pins.
To reach long par fours or to get on a par 5 in two you have to have a driver for distance . In between you need some type of clubs that give decent accuracy, as consistent of performance as possible, and good distance. Fairway woods are generally slightly longer than hybrids and will hit the ball a little further. Lots of people use them and if you hit them well then they are a good choice. Often, folks will still carry at least a 3 wood and maybe a 5 wood in addition to their irons and a driver. The long irons are the hardest clubs to hit and the hybrids are replacing them at all skill levels.
I have replaced my 3, 4, and 5 irons with hybrids. I play to an index of 6 so I can hit long irons pretty well. However, my best long iron shots are about the same as my average shot with the hybrids. My consistency and accuracy have much improved since the switch to hybrids.
I also replaced my 3 wood with a 13 degree hybrid. It is a little shorter club and gives me much better consistency than I got with my 3 wood. The shots are a little lower than with the 3 wood but I get better roll.
I believe your set should obviously have a good set of short and mid irons that match your abilities and you need a driver that you can control. My experience, and that of the folks I play with, indicate the hybrids will be better for most folks than long irons. Fairway woods are a toss up. A low lofted hybrid can be a close replacement in distance for a 3 wood and may be more consistent because it will be a little shorter.
