what is the difference between steel and graphite golf shafts?

Weight and to a point, flex and torque.

Steel for the longest time only came in the 125 gram option. Today, steel can range anywhere between 75g and 130g. Torque (the shaft’s ability to resist twisting when the shot is miss-hit) is a byproduct of its flex… a S flex will have more torque than a L flex, for example.

Graphite can come in a large array of weights. Unlike steel, torque can be engieered in any location in differing amounts throughout the shaft for any flex. You could have a shaft with a butt-stiff, tip-weak setup, or a tip-stiff/butt-stiff configuration… it goes on and on.

If you are gaming a 125g steel driver shaft right now and were to replace it with a 65g graphite version of the same specs, you could see an increase in swingspeed. This is because you eliminated 60g, making for a driver with a lighter overall weight. On the flip side, if you are gaming 75g steel iron shaft and want to put in 65g graphite iron shafts… there won’t be much of a difference.

Graphite has a natural vibration-dampening nature. Steel doesn’t, though this can be easily remedied with Sensicore inserts (or, for a savings of $23, straws and weather-stripping bought at Wal-Mart).

Truly, it won’t matter too much if you’re properly fit. If the choice comes down to you losing some swing speed and are looking for it, switching to graphite can help you find at least some of it. Don’t let anyone fool you- graphite does NOT have to be an inch longer than steel… that’s the lazy but cost-effective way (ie- the OEM way) of keeping consistent swing weights between steel and graphite shafts without having to retool the molds to make heavier heads. If you’re properly fit to a certain length and want to switch to graphite, you can keep the same length (and consistent impacts) with added weight to the head.
