I have a 16hp 42″ riding lawn mower. I want to replace the engine with an electric one — What HP do I need?

I would ideally like the electric motor to be sized such that I can run it off a standard 15a, 110volt outlet if at all possible… with a really long extension cord of course.

If that sounds crazy, what about a DC motor and a couple 6v golf cart batteries? I need to mow 14,000sq ft and would like to drain the batteries down to maybe 40% of a charge remaining.

You can get about 1.8 kw out of a 15 amp line (US), which translates to 2.4 HP. But because of startup surges, I’d not go above 2 HP. This is quite a strain for a riding mower. I’s switch to a push type, you can purchase these with a long cord, AC type, or battery operated. And the exercise is good for you.

You would probably want to have a dedicated 20 amp line installed.

But, replacing the motor, and redoing the controls, etc, is a major project for a very good mechanic. And it would work poorly. Buy a new one, push operated, not riding.

Battery operated mowers have even less power, and the mower is heavier, as you have to push the battery around also. You will need a different motor.

I don’t know what a golf cart battery puts out, but sealed 12 volt lead acid batteries come in sizes up to 100 amp-hours, which comes to about 1kw-hr. So if you used the same rating motor, 2 HP, 1800 watts, this battery (which is quite big) will only last for half an hour. This battery is about $200-300. You will also need a good battery charger.

Again, you can buy mowers with a battery and DC motor. Much easier than converting one. But not the ride type, only the push type.

I has a house in NH that I mowed every week, with a push type. About an acre, 40,000 sq ft. You can do 14k easily with a push mower.
