Acceleration of gravity help?
I am in need of some help with my acceleration of gravity lab…
An experiment is performed in which a golf ball is dropped one meter so that it passes through a photogate, which will measure the time it takes the ball to travel a distance equal to its diameter, at the end of its fall. (In the experiment, the 4cm golf ball took .01s to fall and the acceleration of gravity was about 8.7m/s^2) Would the EXPERIMENTAL (not theoretical) value for the acceleration of gravity change if…
a. a heavier ball was dropped
b. an air-filled balloon was dropped
c. the ball was dropped from a thirty-story building instead of one meter
d. the ball was dropped from the moon
e. the air-filled balloon was dropped from the moon”
I don’t know how to predict experimental values though, and it seems like that could go any number of ways.. should I just assume it’s theoretical?
A. No weight will not change acceleration of gravity.
B. Yes- because the buoyancy force of the balloon in air will slow down acceleration
C. No- Acceleration would remain constant. although the velocity would be greater at that point. acceleration would not change.
D. Yes- i don’t know if it means FROM or ON the moon but yes the gravity of the moon is less therefore acceleration to the ground would be less.
E. No. Because there is no atmosphere on the moon its closely resembles a vacuum and therefore has no buoyancy force. it would accelerate just as quickly as the golf ball.
it says experimental because it wants you to account for the different factors like buoyancy. Theoretically the acceleration of gravity is the same for the balloon and golf ball but experimentally the results will differ here on earth. that’s why that last statement was added.
