Should I get a lob wedge?
I am a 25 handicapper (Joe doesn’t do golf as well as football). My short game has been a disaster this season so I am reading Dave Pelz’s “Short Game Bible”. He recommends putting four wedges in the bag and knowing your club distances from 3 set swing positions (I am going to use a 9 iron as one of my wedges as I already have a pitching wedge and sand wedge).
Is the lob wedge impossible for someone like me to learn to hit? I have heard that it has a very low margin for error. I am curious to hear what more experienced low handicappers have to say about it and when they learned to hit this club. Thanks.
I carry 4 wedges; lob wedge, sand wedge, gap wedge and pitching wedge. I gave up my 5 wood to fit in the extra wedge. There was not much difference in the distance that I could hit my 3 hybrid and a 5 wood and I am much more consistent in hitting the 3 hybrid. I use the lob wedge for full shots between 80 and 90 yds. I also use it for flopping over green side bunkers and the like. The reason that lob wedges are sometimes not recommended for high handicappers is that you have to take a bigger swing and if you catch them thin, you are in trouble. The key to using a lob wedge, especially for flop shots is to make sure you have a good lie. Don’t try to flop from a bare or thin lie.
